The Pokemon TCG gives players plenty of ways to get their best Pokemon ready for battle. The most basic way to do this is by attaching Energy to Pokemon so they can unleash their most devastating Moves. This is usually a race against your opponent to see who can get set up first and start attacking right away.
Reshiram's best cards come with the power of friendship.
Special Energy cards have been around since the start of the Pokemon TCG and have always featured a unique card design and effect to help them stand out. While some of these may get reprinted every now and again, some are worth a bit more than your average Energy. So here are the eight most valuable Special Energy cards in the Pokemon TCG.
Card values reflect the market value as seen on TCGPlayer.com and may be subject to fluctuation with time.
Originally released in the Majestic Dawn set, Call Energy got a second printing under the League and Championship card series. However, unlike modern-day promos, this one features a foil card body with the league symbol as a watermark.
Getting Basic Pokemon into your Bench is necessary if you want to have a good board and set up your plays. Call Energy not only provides Colorless Energy but lets you look through your deck and place two Basic Pokemon onto your Bench. If you do this, your turn ends. While this means you don’t get to attack, you can still make as many plays as you want before activating this effect.
One of the earliest Special Energy cards in the Pokemon TCG was released in the very first Base Set. The effect of this card is as simple as it gets. By playing this Special Energy, you can generate two Colorless Energy for one of your Pokemon.
This usually helps speed up the process of powering up Moves that have more than one Colorless Energy requirement. While there are many better cards in the modern game, this one has a special place in the collector’s binder. This one not only gains value from being nostalgic but also because it comes from a shadowless box set.
Metal Energy is a common card in the modern game. However, it wasn’t always like that, and Metal Energy used to be considered special. Released in the Neo Genesis set, Metal Energy provides one Metal Energy to the attached Pokemon. However, it does a little bit more than just make Moves available.
Here are the most valuable Banette cards in Pokemon TCG!
This card will reduce any incoming damage by ten. There is a catch though. This only works on Metal Pokemon. If it is attached to any other Pokemon, then it weakens your attacks by ten. Regardless, the card design is gorgeous with a holographic background that makes it feel almost three-dimensional when you stare deep into it.
Double Rainbow Energy initially made its debut in the Crystal Guardians set. However, it would later be reprinted in future sets as both promos and new renditions. Double Rainbow Energy works very similarly to Neo Upper Energy with a few different clauses.
You can attach this card to any Evolved Pokemon, but not an EX Pokemon. It provides two of any Energy types but gets removed from the field if your Pokemon ends up getting Devolved back into a Basic Pokemon. Another cost of using this card is that you will do ten less damage from your attacks. Seeing as these Pop Series cards were only available through organized play, they are rather elusive cards.
Rainbow Energy was first released in the Team Rocket expansion of the Pokemon TCG. Team Rocket cards usually revolve around aggression and being able to stomp your opponents at the expense of your own Pokemon’s health.
This Rainbow Energy captures the spirit of that by doing ten damage to the Pokemon you attach it to. On the bright side, this Special Energy counts as every type, which makes it easier to set up your best Moves. This card has a beautiful and dark holographic foiling that almost makes it seem like you’re staring into the depths of outer space. This card also has the first edition stamp on the top right corner.
Prepare for trouble and make it double. Rainbow Energy may have been added way back in the first generation, but in the Sun and Moon era, it got a reprinting as well as new rarities. The most expensive printing can be found in the Celestial Storm set as a secret rare.
With full art Pokemon cards, you have to just stop and admire the work - and these are the best ones.
The card has a premium gold finish with a textured surface. Golden cards are often some of the rarest cards in the sets due to how few of them get the golden treatment. With even more Pokemon getting benefits from having damage counters, Rainbow Energy found a home in various decks.
The Neo Destiny set of the Pokemon TCG introduced a Special Energy known as Miracle Energy. While this card is one of the more valuable Special Energy cards, the effect is something that could only exist in the past.
You are only allowed to have one Miracle Energy in your deck, and it is only compatible with your Shining or Light Pokemon. Like Double Rainbow Energy, it provides two of any Energy types while attached to one of your Pokemon. However, it has one very big downside, which is that it gets discarded at the end of your turn. While not a card you would play, it’s still a neat collector’s item.
Double Colorless Energy is still one of the most nostalgic Special Energy cards in the entire game. It also saw competitive play due to how good it could be for setting up plays. This specific Double Colorless Energy has a special reflective foiling that makes it appear grander.
Unlike other League and Championship cards, this one has a special League Shield logo on the card art. Besides this unique marking, it also has the word Staff on the top right. This is because the card was only ever available to those who worked at the event when it was handed out. This makes the circumstances for encountering this card naturally even more niche.
